10 Utauloids to Get You Started with UTAU (4 Can Sing in English!)
Do you want to have some fun with Vsynth characters but are short on cash like I am? 😭️ Did you read my tutorial on how to set up UTAU in a VM
and now aren't sure what voicebanks to start with? 😬️ Are you a
veteran UTAU user who wants to find out if my recommendations align with
your worldview? 🧐️
Then you're in the right place! ☕️✨️
Today
I'm going to list 10 quality utauloids that are great to get you
started with the program. Some of them are very iconic in the UTAU
fandom as well! Of course there are many, many more utauloids out there.
But this is just a primer. 🙂️
In case you don't know already and if you're just starting out, you should know that Synthesizer V has a basic version
that's completely free to use and has some "Lite" voicebanks that are
free to use for non-commercial use as well. It's a little more
streamlined than UTAU and has the power of AI, so it might be a little
easier for beginners. I talk a little more about it in my VOCALOID vs. Synthesizer V post.
But
back in my day, UTAU was the most accessible free vocal synth software
available. So I'm kind of nostalgic for it! 😅 But even today people are
still using it to make all kinds of cool stuff!
One more thing:
With a lot of utauloids, you need to get permission to use them for
commercial purposes. Just something to think about! Be sure you agree to
those terms of use before using!!
Without further ado, here's my list:
#0: Uta Utane (A.K.A. Defoko) (JP only)
The default UTAU voicebank. So you don't have to download anything! 😌 |
I
like to call her Defoko, personally. Yes, I put her at number 0 instead
of number 1. Since she's already included in the software, it feels
like cheating if I put her as part of my 10 recommendations, doesn't it? 🤔️
Defoko's voice is entirely artificial, generated by Aquest's AquesTalk TTS software. It's a simple CV (Consonant-Vowel) voicebank that's all set up to get you started. You can just lay down some notes using Defoko as a pitch guide until you swap out her voicebank with the one you want. But Defoko is also very popular within the UTAU community and is used in her own right. That being said, given Defoko's artificial, almost scratchy voice quality, it can be hard to use her well.

#1: Kasane Teto (JP + EN)
The most popular utauloid ever. |
Kasane Teto still fools people to this day. What a legend. 🫡
While
Kasane Teto never was (and probably never will be) a
commercially-released Vocaloid, she became so iconic and well known that
she might as well be one. Plus she has her own Synthesizer V voicebank now! But UTAU is where it all began... 🌠
Kasane
Teto has a couple cute-sounding Japanese CV voicebanks that are easy to
use for beginners. But she also has a few VCV (Vowel-Consonant-Vowel)
voicebanks that give her a bit more of a mature sound, as well as some
extras to add a bit of finesse.
She has an English voicebank as well, although it's admittedly pretty difficult to use. If you're not an advanced user of UTAU and want to make Teto sing in English, you might be better off buying Synthesizer V Pro and Teto's SynthV bank so that you can use the cross-language synthesis feature on her voice.

#2: Namine Ritsu (JP only)
A popular utauloid with a demanding presence. |
Another joke Vocaloid from the early days, Namine Ritsu is definitely an... interesting character. 😂️
Ritsu
has a feminine voice with many, many options for voicebanks and a great
expressive range. For beginners she has some CV voicebanks, which are
archived but still available officially. For intermediate users she has
many VCV voicebanks and some CVVC (Consonant-Vowel Vowel-Consonant)
voicebanks as well. For advanced users, she has some AI voicebanks that
can be used with an ENUNU plugin for UTAU.
You can find Ritsu in a
lot of other places these days besides UTAU. For anybody willing to pay
a monthly subscription fee for ACE Studio, she now has an ACE Studio AI voice as well that comes available in the program, which can sing in English via cross-language synthesis.
Technically, Ritsu has an archived UTAU voicebank with some English sounds. But I would say it's too limited in scope to be considered an English voicebank.

#3: Aiko Kikyuune (EN + JP)
|
Originally derived from a fanloid design by the creator/voice provider, Kikyuune Aiko has a clear and powerful voice characterized by roboticness and intelligibility. There are CV voicebanks in both Japanese as well as English. This is great for beginners who really want to make projects in English specifically! She also has a more recent VCV Japanese voicebank and CVVC English voicebank as well, among others.

#4: Yamine Renri (JP only)
A pretty utauloid with a pretty voice. |
A
relatively more recent utauloid, Yamine Renri boasts a beautiful,
expressive, and versatile Japanese voice. She's so good in fact that her
UTAU voices were directly incorperated into Dreamtonic's 1st generation version of Synthesizer V, before AI was implemented into the
software. If that's not a statement about Renri's quality then I don't
know what is. 😮️
She doesn't have any CV voicebanks, which might
daunt some new users. However, once you get a little practice with the
voicebanks listed above, using Renri's VCV isn't too difficult.

Usage examples:
#5: KYE (EN + JP)
A jacked and bilingual dude. |
Another more recent utauloid, KYE has a deep, eccentric, masculine vocal with a distinct rock n' roll flavor. He has a CV Japanese voicebank that's good for beginners, and a VCV Japanese voicebank as well. His English voicebank utilizes the "Arpasing" method for recording and notation. This different approach to English in UTAU might cause potential difficulty of use for some, but KYE is a good Aprasing voicebank to experiment with.

#6: Momone Momo (JP only)
One of the classics. |

Many
voicebanks can be downloaded on the official site, but some are
missing. The Momone Momo wiki should have a mirror for most of them: https://w.atwiki.jp/momonemomo/
Usage examples:
#7: Matsudappoiyo (JP only)
A popular male utauloid. |
Another utauloid from the early days, Matsudappoiyo has a smooth mid-low range masculine Japanese vocal. His one CV voicebank "Retake Warm" is good for beginners, and his most recent VCV voicebank "Light" has a really nice sound overall. There's been a couple times in the past when Matsudappoiyo was made intentionally unavailable. Here's hoping he's here to stay!

#8: Anna Nyui (JP + EN)
A mysterious diva with rabbit ears. |
If you're looking for an utauloid to fill the Gahata Meiji-shaped hole in your heart, then Anna Nyui might be a good alternative. She has an powerful vocal and several VCV voicebanks to choose from, and she has one CV voicebank to get you started. She has a couple English voicebanks as well based on different recording lists.
The author seems to be a skilled UTAU user and used to have a lot of examples on her Youtube channel, but it seems she privatized it as well as her X (Twitter) account due to some sort of controversy. However, she still seems to have examples available on her Soundcloud and Niconico account.

#9: Gekiyaku (JP only)
Characterized by grief. |
This somewhat sinister-looking utauloid was most recently made into an AI voicebank for VOCALOID 6, along with her dead younger brother Kazehiki (who is also an utauloid). Gekiyaku has a powerful and expressive voice with many VCV voicebanks to choose from, and might also be a good alternative to Gahata Meiji. Unfortunately, her CV Japanese voicebanks and CVVC English voicebank are no longer available.

#10: Haruka Nana (JP only)
Kawaii incarnate. |
If you're looking for a really cutesy Japanese singing voice, then Haruka Nana fits the bill perfectly! She's been around for some time. For UTAU she has Standard and Whisper voice libraries in both CV and VCV format, a recently recorded voicebank from 2023, and a few extras. Just don't make any mature content with this one!
